ABOUT ABOUT

The next Chicago QWAFAFEW meeting explores two new approaches to understanding markets. Sentiment analysis looks for actionable information in online news and social media. Nonlinear techniques can often provide useful information when standard methods fail. Speakers from two new Chicago companies will address these topics. The meeting will be held Thursday, June 4, at Charles Schwab, 10th floor of 150 S. Wacker Drive in Chicago. Doors will open at 5pm. The meeting will start at 5:30 and end at 7pm.

Joe Gits, CEO of Social Media Analytics, will provide an introduction to sentiment analysis and SMA’s approach to aggregating stock-relevant information from Twitter and StockTwits. Joe will discuss the design of the signal outputs produced by the SMA methodology, their use, and measures of their predictive power.

Greg Forsythe, cofounder of Revelation Investment Research, titles his presentation “If some is good, is more always better?” Consequential financial variables may be found to have inconvenient impact on performance from the perspective of standard financial models. For example, both high and low levels may be bad, but in between may be good. Greg will discuss how we determine that linear models are inappropriate and what we should use instead.
